SKH looks at circus as an art form and offers educational programmes, courses and research in circus.
Doctoral students and research teachers in circus generate new knowledge in artistic research. The circus education at SKH constitutes an international environment with students and teachers from all over the world. Programmes and courses are given in English.
The art of circus is evolving rapidly, often in extreme manifestations and expressions. Our courses and programmes provide knowledge and understanding of artistic expression in the many forms of circus. Through their artistry, our students contribute to the development of circus vocabulary and a redefinition of circus as an art form.
The programme is structured around presentations where students articulate their developing practice in presentation by integrating knowledge from intersecting fields and engaging in feedback discourses. These presentations are supported by consistent discipline work, course work in fields such as historical and contemporary socio-political contexts, feedback methods, artistic research, creative methods, performance practices, stage technology and rigging, and logistics of professional circus performance.
Information about BA programme:
This programme challenges you to develop advanced artistic and conceptual skills relevant to the existing circus field. The programme also provides the opportunity to apply for postgraduate studies in artistic research.
Information about the MA programme:
Independent courses contribute to skills development for professional circus artists. These short courses last from a couple of weeks to an entire semester, and enable deepening practice in fields such as rigging, directing, discipline training and artistic development. They create an experimental environment at the intersection of education and research with the aim of being at the forefront of circus development.

At SKH artistic research is generated via artistic practice. Our mission is to research art and the contributions art makes to society, by practicing, processing, producing, and thinking in, with, and through art whether via subject specificity or in inter subjective relation with other artistic and/or related fields.
Third-cycle studies within the arts are a central part of the research environment at Stockholm University of the Arts, SKH. SKH awards doctoral degrees in artistic practices and offers third cycle studies in the subject area Performative and Media-Based Practices. This PhD programme offers possibilities for artists to reflect in, on and through artistic practice.
